Success is so simple. Wouldn’t you agree? Simple? Yes! Easy? Maybe not.

What is your goal? Have a bunch of money? Lose some weight? Pay off your bills? Get in shape? Improve a relationship? Those are some difficult goals. Not because of what they are, but because the above goals are too vague. You do need a “Grand Obsession”, and that is the category where these achievments fall. The best way to reach a goal is to make it specific and a bit challenging.  A clear, concise goal is what is needed. Instead of stating you want to lose some weight, how about getting specific, say, Lose 13 pounds in 13 weeks. That is specific.

Step 1. Dream -  I want to lose weight.

Step 2. Goal. - I want to loose 13 pounds in 13 weeks.

Step 3. Write it down. - go ahead write down your goal.

Step 4. Break it down into little pieces. I will lose 1 pound a week. I will allow myself only so many calories a day( whatever it takes to lose a pound a week.

Step 5. Have a deadline. - Your deadline is 13 weeks from today.

Step 6. Inspect what you expect and calibrate as needed. A major mistake in goal setting is to not evaluate where we are at any given time. We sometimes set our goals to high, and sometimes to low. Both conditions are not motivating as when it is too easy we lose interest just as when we know we can’t accomplish what we want, we stop trying. I recommend at least a weekly check in.

Step 7 Repetition. Remind yourself as often as possible about your goal. Tell the world, find pictures and music and quotes that will make you think of your goal. Read your goal first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Step 8. Reward Yourself. Through each step of the way, find some way to reward yourself for your accomplishments. You can make your reward small, just so you are mindful about why you are rewarding yourself.

And there you have it. 8 simple steps, now you get to do the hard work.
